Women
practised all branches of medicine
during the Middle Ages. This
woman, dressed in the height
of contemporary fashion, is
blood-letting by making cuts
or `scarifications'; she has
a special pointed instrument
in her hand. She has already
placed heated vessels (these
look like small balls in the
picture), over earlier cuts.
These create a vacuum which
allows the blood to be drawn
off in measured amounts.
From
an early 15th century English
manuscript.
