On this map the river is perhaps the clearest feature and virtually impossible for the defenders to disguise. Click on the picture above to see the river more clearly.

Why do you think it was so important to the pilot and navigator of the attacking bombers?

Could it be so that:

  • he could try to land in it if he got shot down?
  • he could work out which part of the city he was above?
  • he could follow it to get to the city he was attacking?
