This
map was produced to guide German bomber pilots to their
targets in the Second World War. This particular map
shows details of the area around Liverpool - an important
target because of the docks and industry there.
The colouring
of this map might seem rather strange to the eye, but
that is because it was made to be luminous. The German
airmen on a raid to bomb Liverpool would have needed
to be able to see it in the dark, as this is when most
of the bombing took place. They certainly didn't want
to give their position away to the British anti-aircraft
gunners by having a light on in their plane!
As the planes
were travelling fast, the map had to be very clear,
with the main features easy to see from what was basically
a 'bird's eye' view. The key at the bottom is very important
as it identified the targets for the bombers to try
to hit.
