Although
this plan of the Hampstead Garden suburb is dated a
few years after Queen Victoria had died, the ideas behind
the Garden Suburb are very much Victorian. The concept
was one of an ideal community of people of different
social classes living peacefully together and indeed,
learning from each other.
There were
many Victorians who were appalled at the conditions
in which lots of people lived, especially city dwellers.
They came up with ideas to try to improve this situation.
From the
plan you can see how carefully everything was worked
out. There were different sized houses and plots of
land for the different social groups. The Garden Suburb
idea became a popular one across the country and there
is likely to be an example of one in a town near you.
