The
West African country of Ghana was called the Gold Coast
when this map was made in 1924.
In
the days before computers making maps was a very time
consuming and often repetitive process. The group of
young army officers surveying this part of the country
were tired after many days in the hot sun but they hadn't
finished their work, they still had one more hill to
survey. They assumed no one would notice if they decided
to cheat. In the space on the map that was left for
the remaining hill, the officers drew an elephant copied
from a magazine and they added contour lines around
its shape!
They
were right - no one noticed, and 'the elephant hill'
continued to appear on maps until the 1960s.
