Both
the Christian and Jewish faiths make reference to the
Garden of Eden or an earthly paradise. In the 17th century
there was a strongly held belief that the Bible was
a literal truth. This meant that it would be possible
to locate where exactly in the world Eden was, or rather
where it had once been.
The
expulsion of Adam and Eve, the fall of man, meant that
it would not be recognisable today. This map identifies
quite precisely where it had been. The literal truth
of the Bible is therefore maintained while the expulsion
of Adam and Eve from paradise explains why Eden cannot
be found today.
This
detailed map of the Middle East plots it almost as just
another feature alongside many others in this part of
the world.
