In
the late 18th century Highgate was a fashionable place
to live for those with money. Robert Langford was a
successful London businessman who decided to commission
a surveyor to draw up a plan for a new house in the
Highgate area. The surveyor was John Waddington, you
can just make out his name in the bottom corner of the
plan.
This source
shows that maps and plans were being made to all sorts
of scales and for many different purposes. Unfortunately,
Langford never did get his plan turned into reality
as he did not have enough land for such a grand design
to fit into.
