4. Conversions

Conversions result in new nouns, adjectives and verbs, simply by giving a word an additional job to do ( e.g. using a noun as a verb). This is happening frequently today.

Examples are:

Noun to verb: Target also became 'to target'
Distance became 'to distance' (oneself from)
Side line as on a pitch became 'to sideline' or to leave out
Adjective to noun: Final (match) converted to 'the final'
Mobile has meant moveable since the C15th, but now as a noun means portable phone
Adjective to verb: Empty gave 'to empty' (and 'empties', a noun meaning empty bottles etc.)
Verb to noun: to run gave 'a run' in cricket, the act of running (going for a run) and a short trip out.

Bullet Can you find 3 more examples in each conversion category?

You can either return to the previous pages or go to the Topic menu.
