Throughout
the millennium but especially from the time of the Renaissance
the need grew for new words to fit new concepts and inventions.
Words were once again borrowed from other languages but also
new words were created, often by hammering together parts
of old words or by giving old words new roles* or giving them
new meanings.
*Role
- from an obsolete C17th French word referring to the rolls
of paper on which an actor's part was written.
