Combined or Compound words |
These
can be the simple joining of two words e.g. jobcentre, witchcraft,
briefcase, singsong or climbdown.
They
can involve affixing other lexemes* or units of meaning that
may not be able to stand alone. Familiarity with these lexemes
increases your ability to understand new words in the future.
* a lexeme
is a unit of meaning which may be part of a word or may be
more than one word 'wash up' or
'piece of cake' (= easy)
Look
through the words below. Combine
as many of the lexemes as you can in the following ways and
record the results. Each one can be used more than once.
 |
Combine
them with each other. (What is the word for someone who
fears the light? Or for self-life-writing?) |
 |
Add
them to the following:
sphere,
swim, cultural, sensitive, suggestion, somatic, phone,
-path, -matic, work, seismo- (meaning shake),
choc-, vision, port, chemical, mobile, space (Note
that a letter may need changing or omitting.)
