The Jewish
policemen in the ghettos
were controversial figures. They were often given extra privileges
such as a uniform, their own bicycles, food rations and contraband
from smuggling operations. Many faced moral dilemmas when
they were forced to perform violent acts on fellow Jews by
Nazi
officers. There is evidence that some Jewish policemen were
killed on the way to the camps
by their fellow Jews, as the Jewish policemen were also deported
to the camps
Selected
tasks of Jewish policemen:
- To
guard the ghetto gates together with Nazi guards and
their collaborators
- To
direct traffic in ghetto streets
- To
guard post offices, kitchens and community administration
- To
deter and suppress smugglers
- To
curb beggars in the ghetto
- To
assist in liquidations
of the ghetto
