"When my father died she lost interest, you know. She could see that there was no future for her, she didn't want to live without my father. They loved each other very much, they needed each other, and I don't think, even if she had survived she couldn't see herself having a happy future, so she didn't really want to live somehow, she gave up. And I tried terribly hard to encourage her to, you know, to get herself well, and… but she then went to the hospital and she died there. And that's when I stopped believing in God. Well, you know, I… when she was so ill and I was so afraid she would die, I prayed and prayed and prayed and prayed. I just prayed, just to save her, just to save her, to let her live, all the time. And she died, and I said well, there isn't a god, and if there is one he doesn't care about me, why should I care about him? And that was it, I never believed in a god since."

Biography

Edith Birkin
Born 1927, Prague, Czechoslovakia.
Lodz ghetto 1941. Auschwitz camp 1944. Sent to work camp and munitions factory. 1945 death march to Flossenburg camp, then to Belsen. Arrived in England 1946. Married, three adopted children.
