Synonyms and Origins

The English language is so rich because much of it is plaited from strands of words with different origins which often have very similar meanings.

Bullet Click here to download a worksheet in Microsoft Word format giving a number of word triplets (made up of synonyms or words with close meanings) of Old English, French or Latin or Greek origin.

Either print the words then cut them out and arrange them into their triplets under the three headings in the frame, or use 'cut and paste' within your word processor to complete the task.

Bullet Challenge: can you think of any of your own?
