Inventing new words:

Many famous writers have invented their own words. 'Watership Down' by Richard Adams includes the language of the rabbits, eg a hrududu is a tractor or noisy engine. J. R. R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings' include invented words, and hobbit is one of them. J.K.Rowling invented new words to tell the stories of Harry Potter.

Bullet Find a book you have read which includes invented words and list six to ten, with their meanings, as you would find them if you looked in a dictionary. (Check your dictionary to see how they should look, or see the invented examples below).

Do It Yourself:

Bullet

Imagine you are writing such a book with invented words - it could be fantasy or science fiction, an animal story or a story for young children. Make a list of six to ten words you would like to use, with their meanings. Try to make the words sound right. Look at the invented words from the books you know and on the 'Word Building' topic. Are your words to be Standard English or slang words? - write 'SE' or 'slang' by each. e.g.

Terrawoof, noun, SE a dog that burrows long distances like a mole.
Splatch, verb (slang) to paint a healing liquid on a wound that acts like a second skin. Eg 'You'd better splatch that fast!'

Bullet Build a short story or a poem around some or all of your invented words.

Remember - it's your language and you are the word-builders of the future!
