Matching words across a thousand years…

A thousand years is quite difficult to imagine and tends to seem like a very long time. If we think of a new generation being born every 25 years, then two generations are 50 years apart - perhaps like you and one of your grandparents. Now if you picture a grandparent,

* then his or her grandparent,
* then his or her grandparent,

then his or her grandparent and so on, you would need a line of only 20 grandparents - or a queue at the Post Office - to take you right back to the days of Old English. It is not really so long ago.

20 grandparents!

For Middle English, it could be just 12 grandparents away…

12 grandparents!

Now look at the exercises on the next page.
