is a letter or letters that are added on to
the start of a word to change its meaning
or purpose in some way eg
undo = un (prefix) + do; decompose = de +
compose.
A
suffix
is
a letter or letters that are added to the
end of a word, usually to change its use or
purpose in some way eg Glor(y) + fy = glorify; combin(e)
+ ation = combination.
Some words
have both a prefix and a suffix eg re
+ pay + ment = repayment.
Check
the meanings of the following prefixes
and suffixes by rolling the mouse over
the words. If you learn them, they will
help you understand other words you will
meet in the future. They all come from
Latin or Greek.
